Hello! It's me! Martin Luther King, Jr.

We will be celebrating this week the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On January 18th, we will give thanks to this American Hero for his dream, courage, faith, and love. Every January, I love to teach about Martin Luther King, Jr. before the holiday to give my students an understanding as to why we have no school on Monday.

First, I introduce Martin Luther King, Jr. to my kiddos through biographical text about his life. Here are just a few:

Unforgettable First Grade

The Snowy Day

One of my favorite winter-themed books to share with my kiddos is The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. This book is a favorite of mine because I love the illustrations and the descriptive narration.

The Snowy Day is a story of a young boy's adventures playing outside in the snow. He makes footprints in the snow, makes tracks with a stick, hits a tree, sleds, and makes a snow angel. He tries to save a snowball in his pocket, but of course it melts away. I like how this book resonates with students as they make connections to what they like to do on a snowy day.

There are so many reading comprehension skills that go perfectly with this book such as Sequence of Events, Cause & Effect, Main Idea & Details, BME, Setting, Character Analysis, Prediction, Making Connections, and Visualize just to name a few.  I will be introducing Cause & Effect to my kiddos when we come back from the Christmas Break.

The Snowy Day ~Literature Unit is filled with highly engaging activities to help supplement this classic fiction story. Your kiddos will be able to use their creativity throughout these ready-to-go creative writing response sheets. At the end of this unit, your kiddos will create a super cute craftivity that can be used to display your students reader's response.

This unit includes:
*Vocabulary Cards: Introduce these vocabulary cards before introducing the story to students.
*Reader's Response Sheets: These can be bind together for students to respond to literature or you can use these to go along with the craftivity.
*Journal Prompts: These journal prompts can be added to your students reader's notebook for students to respond to literature. (Note: these prompt are the same as the reader's response sheets.)

Cyber Smile Sale & New Products Posted

I have been extremely busy on creating products for my classroom to start implementing as soon as we return back from Thanksgiving Break. When we return back from the break, my kiddos will be continuing to be immerse in the realistic fiction genre. I have chosen two incredible books to use which my kiddos can relate too. "Earrings" by Judith Viorst is a hilarious book that even I can relate too. Every child has had something they really wanted but our parent always had some excuse to why we can't get it. This book will bring smiles to my students as they think about a time they wanted something very badly. In edition to our realistic fiction unit, my kiddos have been writing personal narrative pieces to go along with our realistic units. Each of the books I've been reading to my students lend itself to the personal narrative structure. They have been impressing me with their writing talents every time they produce a piece of writing. (Click on the picture)

Another book I will be introducing in a few weeks is "Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed" by Emily Pearson. This book will capture my students hearts by going out and producing good deeds for others and expecting nothing in return. I fell in love with this book the first time I read it. This book would be great to introduce this holiday season of giving. As Christmas would be here before we know it, I would like my kiddos to understand that we have the power to change to world for the better through a simple act of kindness. My goal this December is for my kiddos to conduct random acts of kindness throughout my classroom and school-wide. (Click on the picture)

Veteran's Day Celebration

This Wednesday, we take a moment to think about the brave men and women who served, still serving, or given their life to the United States Armed Forces. I would like to share with you a Veteran's Day Mini Unit to get you ready for Veteran's Day. 

Every year, I enjoy teaching my students about veteran's and the sacrifice they make for our freedom. 

There are many great read aloud books that teach students about this national holiday.

This year, my campus is going to have a Veteran's Day Parade called Our Heroes Our Parade. My kiddos will be rocking this super cute hat during the parade.
